What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful, research-supported therapy designed to help people heal from the lingering effects of difficult or traumatic experiences. Instead of relying only on talking through memories, EMDR helps the brain reprocess and store those experiences in a healthier way. By using bilateral stimulation—often gentle eye movements, taps, or sounds—EMDR taxes the working memory, allowing old memories to lose their intensity and emotional charge.

In other words, EMDR helps you move past being “stuck” in old emotional loops so you can respond to life in the present rather than through the lens of past pain.

Big “T” Trauma and little “t” trauma

What to Expect in EMDR Therapy

  • First sessions: We’ll talk through your history and goals. You’ll decide what feels comfortable to share.
  • Preparation: You’ll learn grounding and calming strategies so you always have tools to support yourself during and after sessions.
  • Reprocessing phase: With my guidance, you’ll focus on a memory while using eye movements, tapping, or sounds. As we work, the memory loses intensity and new, more adaptive beliefs can take root.
  • Integration: As the memory shifts, people often notice greater clarity, relief, and new insights. We’ll check in together to make sure you feel stable and supported as changes unfold.

How EMDR Can Help

EMDR is particularly helpful if you’ve felt stuck—like you “know” something logically but can’t shake the emotional reaction.

Many clients find it helps with:

  • Post-traumatic stress (PTSD)
  • Anxiety and panic
  • Depression linked to past experiences
  • Shame and self-criticism
  • Feelings of unworthiness
  • Unresolved or complicated grief
  • Relational wounds and attachment difficulties

Clients often say EMDR helps them feel lighter, less triggered, and more at peace—without erasing their memories. EMDR helps your brain do what it was designed to do: adapt, heal, and move forward.
